FOREST HOUSE
Project type
Natural Landscape
Date
2022
Location
Centre Hastings, Ontario
For this country home located atop a steep forested hill, the intent for the landscape was that it be kept as natural as possible and lawn-free, in keeping with the home's setting.
Large stone slab steps lead from the driveway to the front door. Granite boulders excavated during the house build retain soil for garden beds. Naturalistic perennial gardens were favoured to attract and host local field and forest birds, native bees, butterflies and other pollinators. A small meadow garden using 70% native plants was installed over the septic bed on the south side of the home. A wooden deck, stone patio and stone fire pit are featured in the back of the home as an area to enjoy the heavily treed backyard.
The images below illustrate the changing landscape through the seasons, from spring to fall.
