Location

2022 Landscape Ontario Award of Excellence
This long term client requested that we build a sustainable recreational pond in front of their newly renovated outbuilding, with naturalistic and rock crevice gardens.
We designed a natural ecosystem pond that features a 40’ x 25’ main pond with intake bay, a 10’ x 10’ upper pond, a wetland filtration system and waterfalls. The upper pond flows into the main pond under an 11’ long stone bridge. The main pond is 5’ deep and holds fish, which help maintain the ecosystem and provide aesthetic and recreational value. Three external pumps were used to feed bottom jets, the wetland filter, as well as waterfalls. The bottom jets serve to ensure that there are no stagnant, anaerobic areas within the pond. The wetland filter is 12’ x 10’ and uses a snorkel and centipedes, as well as aquablox, gravel and aquatic plants which act as a mechanical and biological filter. The waterfalls ensure that the water is properly aerated in order to biologically sustain the ecosystem.
Gardens with trees, shrubs, perennials and native plants were installed surrounding the feature to tie in with the previously installed meadow and the new pavilion.
