Since this property sits amongst the beautiful rolling hills and fields of a rural farming community, the design intent was for the gardens to feature naturalistic, prairie-style perennial plantings. The plantings were to serve multiple purposes: aesthetic beauty, food for wildlife and pollinators, edible and medicinal herbs, as well as a place to learn and play for the growing children and family dogs. The garden was planted in two stages - over 3,000 perennial plants were installed in late spring, and about 5,000 spring bulbs were installed in the fall.

For the living space, a patio was designed to be in keeping with this century-old home. Natural limestone drystone walls were erected to retain a flagstone patio. Natural stone slabs were used as steps leading to the gardens and driveway. The goal was to ensure that the landscape as a whole would look timeless, as though it had formed naturally over centuries. The plantings surrounding the patio are in keeping with the meadow gardens at the front of the property and serve to soften the surrounding expansive areas of stone.
