TRENT HILLS WILDSCAPE - PHASE I
Project type
Wildscaping
Date
2022
Location
Warkworth, Trent Hills, Ontario
Awards
2024 Horst Dickert Memorial Award, Green Stamp Award, LO Award of Excellence
We were contacted by a young couple who bought a willow farm property in Trent Hills, Ontario, as a place to build their future home. The property already had a few small buildings which they used as a temporary shelter while waiting to build their new home.
The brief for the initial phase of this project was to 1) enhance the outdoor living space behind a small Quonset hut, and 2) pay homage to the previous willow farmers by utilizing the existing living willow structures in a small garden that would naturalize seamlessly with the surrounding landscape.
For the outdoor living space, we utilized an existing berm to create a rock garden with large granite boulders, and installed a gravel patio to allow for outdoor furniture and a fire pit.
For the homage to the willow farm, we installed a drought-tolerant, pollinator meadow over approximately 680 square feet, with a gravel path meandering through the structures. The plant palette includes approximately 70% native plants.
